Recently I posted a list of the Top Ten Zombie Movies. At the suggestion of Lemmy Caution I viewed Lucio Fulci’s ZOMBIE. The movie was not as good as I was hoping for sorry Lemmy. You were spot on with your description of it being gory and atmospheric. My main gripe was that a lot of the film happens during the day. To me Zombies should come out at night primarily or be in a gloomy location.
This movie is about a news reporter following the story of a mysterious sail boat that has turned up in New York and a woman searching for her father played by Tisa Farrow (Mia Farrows sister)to a tropical island. On this island they meet up with a doctor that is trying to cure the dead who are returning to life. The story line is your traditional plot of unsuspecting people stumbling upon a never ending supply of zombies who are thirsty for blood. There is a lot of gore and despite being slow the zombies seem to have super human strength as always. Plus they have teeth like razors that are able to pierce flesh. One of my favorite aspects of the film is that the there is a very unique scene where a zombie attacks a shark and I have yet to see that and probably never will again. I like the synthesizer music and love the eeriness. One of the aspects I did not like about this film is the poor dubbing of the voice overs. It was very noticeable. I know the budget was not much for this film but that is always off putting. Secondly, I felt that the sense of despair was not as prevalent as in Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead. Those films have an apocalyptic feel throughout the entire film unlike this movie.
