It appears that Michael Fassbender is out and Tom Hardy is in to star in the film adaptation of John le Carre’s ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’ for Working Title. The film is set at the height of the Cold War and follows George Smiley a middle-aged intelligence expert, played by Gary Oldman, who is recalled out of forced retirement to hunt down a Soviet mole. Ricky Tarr, played by Tom Hardy, helps Smiley put the pieces of his investigation together.
Fassbender was set to play Tarr but is committed to his role in ‘X-Men: First Class’ so he has had to bow out. The film also stars Ciaran Hinds, Jared Harris, Colin Firth, David Thewlis and Benedict Cumberatch and begins shooting in a few weeks.
I am glad that Tom Hardy is getting this well deserved exposure. I am going to call in the ‘Inception Effect’ from now on because it seems that stars that shined in ‘Inception’ are getting some great roles. I am a huge fan of Fassbender and I am glad he has gotten more roles since starring in ‘Inglorious Basterds’, but I love Tom Hardy and think he will make a great fit in this cast. I have never read the novel, but le Carre is a great with espionage.
What are your thoughts of this casting news? Does this sound like a movie you are interested in seeing?
