Keanu Reeves turns down Akira lead

Keanu Reeves has passed up the lead role in the big-screen adaptation of Akira.

The film, directed by Albert Hughes, will be adapted from the 1988 anime and was, until today, going to see Reeves play a member of a biker gang in a cyberpunk dystopia called Kaneda.

On turning it down, fans have wondered if this has been a result of production difficulties over at Warner Bros. However, the studio denies this explaining that the project “is still very much in the development stage” and has “not yet been greenlit”.

The search continues for the film’s lead star.
