Sad news this morning after Blizzard entertainment released this statement earlier this morning. Blizzard has indeed announced that the next Blizzcon will only be held in 2013, as well as their Battle.net Championship being moved to Asia this year. For those planning to make the pilgramige this year, this comes as quite the dissapointment, while those who watch the massive event online will still get the chance to see the Championship live.
The yearly Blizzcon started back in 2005 and has always been held in the Anaheim Convention Center. The show is a celebration of all this Blizzard, often bolstering playable demos, early trailers, and a huge cosplay community. Blizzard will most often use the event to announce something major, such as expanisions to its massivly popular World of Warcraft franchise, or updates to current works in progress such as Starcraft II and Diablo III.
As far as why the sudden change to the Blizzcon format, no official news has surfaced. Some speculate that it could be the cost of the event, but this seems unlikely due to the mass amounts of revenue and PR that the event draws in. A more accurate guess would be timing, Blizzcon is giant and the next years event requires planning almost a year in advance. Coupled with almost being required to have a major announcement every year puts a strain on developers to rush out unfinished works. Perhaps changing the event to a once every two years style would work great for a convention that only features one game developer. Whether or not this idea or style will continue, we won’t know until atleast late 2013 or early 2014.
