Though Woody Allen’s oeuvre is inextricably linked with New York City, most of his late-career success has been with films that set the action across the pond. Jumping from the U.K (Match Point) to Spain (Vicky Christina Barcelona) to France (Midnight in Paris), Allen’s been as spry as a backpacking undergrad lately. So it’s not surprising that he’s extended his Eurotrip into Italy for his newest movie, To Rome with Love.
Its just released-trailer – which you can see below, courtesy of Yahoo – shows an all-star cast dealing with a variety of romantic passions and predicaments. Like a lot of Allen projects, it looks both silly and acerbic – it’ll be interesting to see how the seemingly difficult tonal shifts are executed in the finished product. The promising ensemble includes Alec Baldwin, Penélope Cruz, Judy Davis, Jessie Eisenberg (looking very much like the requisite Allen surrogate), Greta Gerwig, Ellen Page, and Woody Allen himself in his first onscreen role since 2006’s Scoop. Also: Roberto Benigni Alert! (Hide your chairs, hide your seat-fillers.)
To Rome with Love is set for a limited U.S. release on June 22 – just in time to make you regret postponing those European vacation plans. Watch the trailer and let us know what you think of Allen’s latest, capice?
