Warning: This is the recap of the season finale, so there are some big spoilers!
Well, I don’t want to brag and say that I called this, but yeah…I did. After a season of waiting, it was finally unveiled on How I Met Your Mother who is Barney’s bride to be, and it is…..drumroll please…..Robin! I’m not too shocked by this. My faith was shaken briefly at times while Barney was with Quinn, but all signs were pointing to it. And sure enough, I was right. In another interesting turn of events, it looks like Ted and Victoria are back on! Now anyone who knows me knows that I’ve been pushing for Victoria to be the mom since Season 3. For a period of time, these claims were more jokes then anything, but I never lost hope, and now’s she’s back in the driver’s seat! Now, do I think she’s the mother? Probably not. It’s unlikely that she’s Cindy’s (Rachel Bilson) roommate, but who knows really. I have a few more words I’d like to say about How I Met Your Mother in general, but let me first talk about the episode.
The episode starts with Lily in labor, where she has Ted and Robin distracting her with various stories from their group. Meanwhile, Marshall and Barney are super drunk in Atlantic City with no way to get home. Overall, the first half of the episode is very weak, and just leads up to the climax of Lily giving birth. The best part of the first bit is the baby’s middle name: Marvin “Wait for it” Eriksen. The second half is where things really pick up. At the persuasion of Robin, Ted calls Victoria, the woman he reconnected with earlier in the season. At the time, Victoria was engaged, and seemed to shoot down any hope of the two rekindling their love. However, upon her arrival, we see that she is in fact in her wedding dress! She left her wedding to see Ted, the man she says she never fell out of love it. Ok, all together now…. WHATTTT!?!?!?
As this is going on, the side plot is Barney and Quinn going on a romantic getaway to Hawaii. While there, security stops Barney to check his bag, which includes a mystery box with explosives in it. While this provides most of the comic relief from Ted and Victoria’s storyline, it doesn’t serve much purpose other then that. That is until the end, when Barney unveils the trick, leading to him popping the question to Quinn, who says yes! We go back to Ted and Victoria, driving off into the sunset together. Ted convinces her that she has to go through with the wedding, and says he is driving her to the church. However, upon arrival, Ted drives by, and the two hold hands as they actually drive off into their sunset! This means that for now, the two are back together, but do they stay that way? All we really know is that in two years time, Ted will be expecting his first child. What will happen before then?
Lastly, we have the big unveiling that we’ve been waiting for all season long: the reveal of the bride, who as I mentioned already, is Robin. The time jump simply said “alitte ways down the road” so we are not sure how long it will take to get there. But this leaves us with several questions going into next year. How do Barney and Robin get back together? Are Ted and Victoria staying together for good this time? I don’t want to wait to find out!
Well another season of How I Met Your Mother has come and gone. This season, like the past couple, has been rather disappointing upon first glance. There was good progression with Ted’s storyline, Marshall and Lily are now parents, and we now know that our favorite dysfunctional couple will end up being together. So I would like to purpose a toast: a toast to How I Met Your Mother.
This is one of my favorite shows of all time. Sure the first few seasons are better then the latter, but the show has had to grow and evolve with its main characters. And that’s what I love about it. It’s such a simple show at the core: 5 friends growing up together. Everyone can relate to that in some way. Older viewers can look back on those days in their lives. Viewers like me who are around the age as these characters can sympathize with the progression these people are making from college graduates to full fledged adults. And those that are too young to know what it’s like in real life know what they have to look forward to.
Everyone has 5 friends who fit this mold to a tee. You have the couple like Marshall and Lily who’ve been together forever, who find ways to stay bros while also settling down together. You have the hopeless romantic in Ted who’s always on the look out for the one to settle down with. You have the ladies man in Barney who’s life appears to be empty, full of meaningless sex, but in his words, is “awesome.” And Robin, the girl who more often then not is the biggest bro of all the group.
So here’s a toast to How I Met Your Mother. A toast to your friends, the people who shape your life and bring happiness to it. A toast to friendship, to memories, to that amazing feeling that you get when you realize that you mean as much to someone as they mean to you. It’s the best feeling in the world. Thanks for the memories How I Met Your Mother. I’m looking forward to closing out this chapter with you.
