With John Hillcoat’s Lawless being moved up to August and marketed more like a traditional summer blockbuster shoot ‘em up – individual character posters and all – Andrew Dominik’s Killing Them Softly looks like the fall’s best bet for fans of gritty, morally complex crime sagas. Set to open on September 21, the film stars Brad Pitt as Jackie Cogan, an enforcer who becomes a sort of mob-sanctioned detective when he investigates a hold-up of a high stakes poker game.
It’s a familiar environment for the Aussie director, whose first feature Chopper was a bracing character study about a violent convict pursuing his own form of justice in the criminal underworld. Killing Them Softly is also Pitt’s second collaboration with Dominik after The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford and also features James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta, and Sam Shepard in a promising ensemble cast.
Do you think Killing Them Softly has enough star power to be Domink’s commercial breakthrough? And more importantly, will Roberta Flack appear on the soundtrack? Let us know what you think in the comments.
