Director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Forest Gump, Castaway) introduces Flight as his first live-action film since 2000. Denzel Washington leads the way as commercial airplane pilot Whip Whitaker (possibly the letter W‘s catchiest name) who gains instant fame for landing a flight after the aircraft he’s flying experiences mid-air failure. The world is saying that not many, if any other pilot could have safely landed that specific flight without killing everyone on board — “it was an act of God.” Instantly, pilot Chesley Sullenberger III, who shot to fame as the nation’s hero back in 2009 for successfully landing a disabled US Airways flight in the Hudson River, comes to mind. In Mr. Whitaker’s case, there is more to his story. As the story progresses, details are learned that begin to chip away at the savior image that the media cast upon Whip. His past may have played a bigger part in the fateful day than anyone initially realized.
The plot is intriguing, although I hope they did not reveal too many twists already. The trailer’s edit job, coupled along with The Stones’ “Gimme Shelter,” makes me upset I have to wait until Nov. 2 to find out the resolution. Zemeckis recruits some big names (many Oscars among them) to support Washington; John Goodman, Don Cheadle and Melissa Leo.
Have at the trailer below.
