The Possession‘s creepy trailer says the movie is ‘based on a true story,’ which makes it even more scary for me. The story starts out looking like a happy family, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Grey’s Anatomy, Magic City) as the father and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer, Kevin Bacon‘s better half) as the mother. The parents start to notice something bizarre happening with their daughter Em, played by Natasha Calis, who was recently in the short lived The Firm on NBC. All of this began with a cursed box, that once opened unleashes evil. It is referred to as a Dybbuk box, which means it is haunted according to Jewish folklore. The real-life box became infamous in 2004 when it was put on the market via eBay.
The story seems bizarre, and although based off a true story, it feels like the run of the mill, scary, possessed girl movie — but I could be wrong. Morgan and Sedgwick are both great actors. The movie also stars: Madison Davenport (Shameless), Grant Show (Melrose Place, Private Practice). The film comes from Danish director Ole Borndeal. Hits theaters August 31, 2012.

Synopsis:
The box is real, its curse is legendary. Ole Bornedal directs the tale of the horrific nightmare unleashed on one family who unwittingly brings a cursed box into their home. The real-life box gained notoriety in 2004 when it sold on eBay after causing inexplicable bad fortune to its owners which were attributed to a dibbuk – a malevolent spirit of Jewish folklore trapped in the haunted box. — (C) Lionsgate.
