Killing Then Softly has been a long time in the making, and I for one am uber excited to see it! The film looks like American mob crimes at its best, based off the 1974 novel Cogan’s Trade written by George V. Higgins. Jackie Cogan is played by the film’s biggest star, Brad Pitt (we don’t need references, right?). Cogan is called in when two guys rob a mob-related poker game. The mob wants answers and he’s the guy to give it to them. This film also has two of the best actors who have played infamous Italian mob gangsters in Ray Liotta and James Gandolfini, or Henry Hill (Goodfellas) and Tony Soprano (The Sopranos) respectively. Suffice it to say, I can’t wait to see the two of them on screen together.
The film premiered at the end of May during the 2012 Cannes Film Festival where it was vying for the Palme d’Or, which is the highest prize at the festival. From what I’ve read, the film has received nothing but positive reviews. Director and Screenplay writer of the flick is Andrew Dominik, best known for his work on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Pitt played Jesse James, so this project reunites the duo. If you’re like me and you like guns, boys, and anything mob-related then I wouldn’t miss it. I have an inkling it may pop up during award season — you never know.
The film also stars the endearing Richard Jenkins, Scott McNairy (Monsters), and Ben Mendelsohn (Animal Kingdom). The movie hits theaters October 19. Check out the trailer below:
