Last night I had the pleasure of being one of the first people to watch the Season 4 premiere of The League, and it looks like we are in for another great season. In the episode, the gang is invited to visit Dallas Cowboys Camp, while Jenny is left behind to deal with the impending birth of their baby. I won’t spoil much more then that, but I will say that there are a ton of NFL players in the episode, and I hope it’s a trend of things to come.
After the screening, the creators Jeff and Jackie Schaffer joined the group for a Q&A. They had a bunch of great stories about the show, both on and off the set, but one of my favorites was how the show came about.
“We were on vacation Skiing in France during Christmas a few years ago, and Jackie made us reservations at a fancy restaurant. Problem was that was Christmas night, which just so happened to be Super Bowl Sunday in two of my leagues.,” Jeff said while laughing. “So I would sneak out saying that the food was making me sick, but I was actually going outside to make expensive phone calls just find out how I was doing. The third time, Jackie caught me, and said “Well we might have something here.”"
Many of the questions throughout the night were people asking if some of their favorite characters would be coming back this season. Understandably, the two were tight lipped about giving too much away, but they did tease that a few people “might” be coming back.
“We are trying to get a bunch of people back this season. We are hoping Will Forte will be back, Rafi will definitely be back, and there’s also a chance that the Crawdad man will be back,” said Jackie.
The League has had a laundry list of NFL stars on the show: Joshua Cribbs, Terrell Suggs, Chad “Ochocinco”, and on the latest episode, we had Robert Griffin III and Trent Richardson, amongst several others. When asked about working with NFL players, both had nothing but great things to say about them.
“You know what, working with NFL players is so much better then working with actors,” said Jackie. “They are always on time, they are all really nice, and amazingly, they actually know their lines and read the script! This is so awesome because our actors never read the script!” Jackie said jokingly.
However, one player stood out for Jeff. “Terrell Suggs was just great. He has a wicked sense of humor, and he was really great to us. He even came in on short notice to help us out with promos this year. Can’t say enough about Terrell.”
Listening to the two talk, you really got a sense of how casual the whole show is. According to them, the casting process was really informal. “We knew who we wanted for these characters, so we just had lunch or dinner with all of them, and we kind of just went from there. We didn’t really have any formal auditions, and when everyone got together, we knew that we had found the perfect cast,” said Jeff.
