If you use the social media app Vine or follow Bethesda, you may have noticed Bethesda has been sending out 3 cryptic posts teasing a possible new game. Speculation abounded: Fallout 4? A Call of Cthulhu sequel? A My Little Pony MMO? I thought it might be the latter due to the barbed wire and creepy flowers. But hey, I’ve been known to be wrong.
And I was right about being wrong. The new game is a new, original IP from Shinji Mikami and Tango Gameworks, the creator of the Resident Evil series. The game is titled The Evil Within and is due out sometime in 2014. The original titled was Zwei, which is German for “two” or a made up word that just sounds oogie-boogie.
Live action trailers normally don’t do it for me. They often feel like a cheap excuse to not have any game play, and often for horror games, we get gooftastic trailers for F.E.A.R. 3, the least scary “horror” game released in the last ten years. This one feels like it knows the audience it’s selling to, with some cheap (but effective) jump scares, gory goodness, some four-armed creatures, and no clue what the game is actually about. All we know is that it’s survival horror made by the guy who practically invented and then re-invented the genre, with Resident Evil 1 & 4, respectively. Note: Bethesda is doing any development work at this point. Zwei, now The Evil Within, has been in the works for a few years, so Bethesda is acting primarily as publisher, or they may do some localization work.
What I’m hoping for is that this game takes a lesson from the amazing Amnesia series and focused more on tense, dramatic horror and less on the campy, gross-out shooty action the current Resident Evils and Silent Hills have slunk to. We’ll keep you posted as new info about The Evil Within is available.
The Evil Within is set to release for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and next-gen consoles in 2014.
