We are used to seeing actor Glenn Howerton hanging out at our favorite dive bar in Pennsylvania, playing the character Dennis Reynolds on the FXX hit comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. However, Howerton looks to have bigger aspirations than being simply a TV comedic staple. In fact, Howerton recently auditioned for a huge action role: Peter Quill, the lead of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
This was exciting news for me to hear. Always Sunny is one of my favorite shows, and it’s always great to see these actors succeeding, or trying to, in other genres. Comedy specifically is a genre where it’s easy to be typecasted, but Charlie Day, who plays Charlie on Always Sunny, recently showed he could be a key member of an action movie, playing Dr. Newton Geiszler in the summer hit movie blockbuster Pacific Rim.
While I do love Howerton, I think being the lead of a Marvel super hero movie is a big jump for him. Chris Pratt, who ended up getting the role, did some serious bulking up for the role, also going on a strict diet as part of his preparation. In fact, he joked that at his most recent birthday, the “cake” was his age spelled out in vegetables. While Howerton often joked about his physique on the show, it’s not one that exactly inspires awe and amazement in regards to the standard of the muscle filled title characters of the Avengers movies.
While Guardians may not have been the right role for Howerton, there is certainly a place for him in a future comic book style movie. Howerton later went on to say that he would love to play the Riddler, which I think could be a perfect fit for him. Howerton has the quirkiness and combination of humor and evilness that he could perfectly toe the line of. My reaction to this news was similar to the news that Neil Patrick Harris was also interested in a potential future Riddler role. I’m not sure that the hero role is the right one for Howerton. He seems more like a villain to me.
