DVD/Blu-Ray Review: THE SCORPION KING 3: BATTLE FOR REDEMPTION can be considered an enjoyment

I think it is safe to say that most people have heard of the movie franchise THE MUMMY. If you didn’t know, that franchise spawned a prequel franchise with THE SCORPION KING in 2002 which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Michael Clarke Duncan, Steven Brand, and Kelly Hu. This prequel film was the only one released in theaters. There have now been two more in the SCORPION KING franchise released straight to DVD and Blu-ray. The newest of the franchise, THE SCORPION KING 3: BATTLE FOR REDEMPTION will be available for DVD and Blu-ray purchase January 10, 2012.

In the newest film:

THE SCORPION KING 3: BATTLE FOR REDEMPTION brings the heroic, larger-than-life saga of the dethroned king Mathayus to face some of his fiercest demons and most vicious rivals—both real and supernatural—ever. In a dangerous, action-packed battle to regain his glory and reclaim the empire, Mathayus’s journey is steeped in intrigue, sorcery and romance…The film’s fight scenes, choreographed by stunt experts Kawee “Seng” Sirikanerut (ONG BAK: THE THAI WARRIOR) and Supoj “Jimmy” Khaowwong (BATMAN BEGINS), are showcased within enchanting ancient palaces, against a backdrop of breathtaking desert vistas. THE SCORPION KING 3: BATTLE FOR REDEMPTION also stars Golden Globe® winner Ron Perlman (HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY) as Horus, the powerful King of Egypt, and Billy Zane (DEAD CALM) as the villainous Talus.

The plot of the film is rather easy to follow: stop the evil guy from destroying the kingdom. There are a lot of positives in the film. The action sequences are pretty top notch in my book. With most straight DVD movies, you expect a lower grade of film but the action in this movie gives it cause for a wider audience. Add in the fact that they shot this film in beautiful Thailand, you have on good looking film.

There was only one real downside for me. I could have done without most of the dialogue. The writers tried to hard to make this film slightly comedic with it’s quick, corny one-liners. Pretty much every cliche line you could think of for this film genre makes the cut in this film. But luckily there is enough action sequences to overshadow this negative p0int.

I like how the filmmakers included some known muscle men in WWE wrestler Dave Bautista and UFC fighter Kimbo Slice. These additions should help drive an audience to give this movie a chance.

Overall, if you come in knowing slightly what to expect from the movie, you will definitely have a good time. It is by far, not a thinking man’s movie but just a movie to enjoy with some friends.
