WILFRED “Control” Episode Recap – Squishy Tits…er, Jenna is Back!

“The master understands that the universe is forever out of control.” – Lao Tzu

This week’s Wilfred, Control finally answered a question that I’ve been waiting to get the answer to since Wilfred and Ryan’s new squeeze Amanda were first introduced to each other.  What is Amanda’s dislike of Wilfred all about?  Is it just Wilfred or is it all dogs or even all animals?  I pontificated that it may have to do with her research and having a disdain for animals born out of a necessity to be able to experiment on them or something of that nature, and the truth couldn’t be farther from my half-baked theory.  Control showed us a new issue for Ryan as he tries to make everything turn out exactly the way he wants it to, particularly between Amanda and Jenna.  Oh yes, Jenna and Drew are back too!  I’m looking forward to seeing the Amand-Ryan-Jenna triangle issues that are certain to arise, I imagine pretty quickly.  After last week’s episode that left us with very little forward movement or story development, this week’s busy, never slowing storyline really picked up the momentum and gave all of us so much to look forward to through the rest of the season.

At the beginning of control, Jenna is lamenting her giggle-worthy but humiliating “squishy tits” auto-tuned video  on Youtube with Ryan as they sit and watch together on the beach.  Amanda happens by just then, and I noticed an odd moment beyond just “catching” Ryan with Jenna.  She is understandably taken aback by seeing him in a somewhat intimate moment with another woman, but seems surprised that he didn’t know she would be there when she explains she is there working out.  Maybe I’m reading more into that than is necessary, but did Ryan accidentally on purpose cause that interaction to happen? No matter, check out the video that started this controversy below…ladies and gentlemen, I give you “squishy tits”.

Ryan is obsessively concerned with the way Jenna and Amanda met, citing that the next step in their relationship is Amanda meeting his friends and if there is any animosity, that may not go well.  Wilfred, after one of his disturbing stories he uses to illustrate his philosophies, tells Ryan that you can’t control relationships, you have to let things happen naturally.  Ryan throws this advice aside and moves forward with an idea for a dinner party.  Wilfred is excited about the dinner party as he says they “totally bring out the Pomeranian in me!”.  Wilfred, of course, is not invited as Ryan in his fit of controlling the situation wants to make sure the evening is as trouble-free as possible.

When Ryan puts the invitation to a dinner party with Jenna and Drew to Amanda, she agrees, but has a question for Ryan.  He, as we, assume it will be relating to his relationship with Jenna, but not so.  She wants to know if Jenna is squishy tits and makes a great joke to go along with it.  Ryan nixes talk of the video at the dinner, much to my chagrin.

Ryan’s dinner party starts off well, Drew brings some disgusting sounding concoction of pumpkin kale ale and looks panicked as Ryan suggests getting everyone some wine, though relaxes when Ryan adds in an exception for his beer.  Same old Drew, I’ve missed his dopiness.

No surprise to anyone, Wilfred shows up at the backdoor with his date, Bear (who is apparently “on the wagon”, after some issues).  Ryan pleads with Wilfred not to mess with the dinner party, especially not Amanda.  Of course that won’t do, Wilfred makes  beeline for her and Amanda flips out.  Finally!  I couldn’t wait to find out what Amanda’s issues with dogs are, but I had to wait just a bit longer.  Ryan and Drew both make a failed attempt at breaking the tension that arises when Amanda’s disdain for Wilfred makes everyone uncomfortable.  Bear can’t handle the tension in the air and turns back to the bottle prompting Wilfred to tell Ryan “Looks like we’re in for a bumpy night”.   Bear continues to ruin the evening after getting wasted, and as Wilfred tries to run interference, he causes more issues with Amanda at the diner table.  And with that, we’re off to the races.  The dinner party is on a downhill slide, though with Wilfred there how could it go any other way?

Due to Wilfred and Bear’s antics, Amanda and Jenna argue over the cleanliness of dogs mouths, Amanda citing her scientific experience and Jenna citing her journalistic experience as her reference point, to which Amanda throws down a pretty cold,  “I’ve seen your work.”   This is presumably an allusion to the “squishy tits” video you see above.  Wilfred calls out Amanda as not just a dog hater, but a people hater too since she doesn’t seem to be getting along with anyone.   Ryan though is determined to turn things around and as Amanda is away from the table, he tells Jenna and Drew the “reason” behind her issues with Wilfred.  He claims Amanda was attacked by a dog as a child and was bitten on her left butt cheek badly enough to leave a nasty scar that she still has.  The couple is very sympathetic and promise not to mention what they know to Amanda.

This momentarily rallies everyone, apologies all around.  Amanda tries to pretend she hasn’t seen squishy tits and invites Jenna to go to her spa with her.  Wilfred points out to Ryan that usually women don’t go for spa treatments fully clothed, giving Ryan an aha! moment regarding Amanda’s fake dog bite butt scar.  When he realizes his mistake, he quickly tries to cover it and control the situation with yet another lie.  He tells Amanda that Jenna has a heart condition that precludes her from being able to go to a spa, but that she is too nice to say anything about it.  Once again he ensures that Amanda won’t mention what she knows to Jenna, but that they will do something where more clothes are involved in the mean time.

Wilfred tires of waiting for Ryan to be taken down of his own volition and takes matters into his own paws by jumping on Amanda in such a way that he repeatedly pulls her pants down, exposing her butt to Jenna.  The story Ryan orchestrated to explain Amanda’s disdain for Wilfred comes out and Amanda is furious that he would try to make excuses for her actions, even calling Jenna “squishy tits” when she tells her to stay out of their argument.  Amanda proceeds to tell everyone the mortifying story of why she doesn’t like dogs.  Amanda tells a story of how she used to spend these amazing days at her grandfather’s house and how her grandfather had two dogs that she used to love playing with at his house all the time.  But one time when they showed up her grandfather was found dead.  He had been there for a week or more and the dogs had gotten ravenously hungry and had starting eating parts of the man.  I was so ready for this moment through the whole show, and when it happened I kept looking at my husband going…she’s just effing with them, no way that is the real story, she’s totally getting them back, but that moment never came.  Because of this,  the big reveal was quite rewarding, and not anything like what I thought it would be which I can only assume the writers intended when putting this moment down on paper.  It translates so much better in the show as being so horrendous as to be laughable, I am not a monster!  Brava Mr. Zuckerman and team!

After everyone is left in stunned silence, Ryan goes to find Amanda.  When he opens the bedroom door he finds her and Wilfred cuddling on the bed.  Somehow Wilfred managed to make everything better by going to Amanda while she was upset and helping her understand what it is we all love so much about these wonderful creatures, their compassion.  I know it sounds ridiculous in reference to Wilfred, but he obviously has it.  If not for Amanda, at least for Ryan, enough so to repair the relationship with Amanda and all of dog kind.  Thanks to Wilfred’s actions, Amanda forgives Ryan and wants to repair things with Jenna.  We end on a more typical Wilfred moment, his taking a huge whiff of Amanda’s crotch, telling her “It’s nice to finally meet you.”

Couch moments:  We find that Amanda and Jenna are going out to dinner, Ryan happy they are getting along.  Wilfred proud of Ryan for giving up control,  and uses the guise of praising Ryan for his accomplishment to gain control of the remote.  Bear is back on the straight and narrow, though had to bottom out before getting back in program.  Bear’s sponsor is an origami swan.  When Wilfred sees Ryan’s disdain at this development, Wilfred tells him “You and I know the swan can’t actually talk to Bear, but it helps Bear”, ending on a great reference to the relationship within a relationship within a relationship (with certain tings not being able to talk to others but it helps anyway) of Swan to Bear to Wilfred to Ryan.

Control is a solid episode through and through.  It brought back some great characters and complicated plenty of relationships for future episode fodder.  I’m looking forward to next episode, more comedy and maybe a guest star or two, especially after David Zuckerman‘s tweet telling us next week will be the funniest of the season.  The only thing I become concerned about is the more issues Ryan works through, the less he needs Wilfred, but I guess that’s all part of the grand scheme of things.

Who should Ryan end up with, Jenna or Amanda?  Share your answer below in the comments!
