DEXTER: “Chemistry” Episode Recap
Well things were certainly going to be interesting this week on Dexter after the huge ending the week before. What would happen between Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) and Dexter (Michael C Hall) after they hooked up? Would Dexter look at her in a new light, or would he still be determined to kill her? Well those questions weren’t really answered this week, but we did learn some new things. Let’s look into it.
In the beginning of the episode, Dexter and Hannah decide that they shouldn’t see each other anymore, due to the fact that they are both too alike, in a scary way. This was disappointing to me at first, but as expected, this didn’t last too long. The two of them combine together to take care of crime writer Sal Price (Santiago Cabrera), who is hot on their trail. Price believes that Hannah has committed multiple murders, and after he sees Dexter and Hannah together, he confronts Dexter about their relationship, and accuses him of fudging the blood work to cover for her. We’ll come back to that in a bit.
Over at the police station, things seem to be catching up with Quinn (Desmond Harrington). If you recall, in the previous episode, he took the key evidence that was keeping Isaac (Ray Stevenson) in prison. Well when the police find out the evidence is gone, Isaac walks right out of jail, and he is free to hunt down Dexter again. When Sgt. Batista (David Zayas) questions Quinn about what he did in the evidence room, he immediately gets defensive and confrontational. Look, he’s surrounded by detectives at work. They also know that he’s dating a stripper who work’s at Isaac’s club. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that he’s the prime suspect. Should be an interesting story line to keep an eye on.
In other news at the station, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) is doing her best to convince Capt. LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) that she should give up on her search for a new Bay Harbor Butcher. While LaGuerta concedes to her that she may be wrong, I doubt she gives up on this. She seems like a stubborn person from what we’ve seen, so I don’t think this is the end of it. More importantly, I hope it isn’t. I like the fact that Dexter has so much on his plate this season, and I hope this isn’t the end of the storyline.
Getting back to Hannah, she invites Sal over to talk about him for his book. Hannah breaks down and gives a tearfully admits of her murders to Sal, confirming what we already knew. Shortly after, Sal visits Dexter, who is looking for a reason to get rid of him. Dexter comes up with a plan to frame Sal for a murder that he wrote about, but before he can do that, Sal collapses and hits his head on a table. Sal dies of a heart attack, and Dexter knows exactly who did it: Hannah.
Hannah poisoned Sal using the same plant that she used on both her ex-husband and her mentor. Dexter confronts her, and after a heated discussion on how Sal should have been handled, they have sex, again. In the end, we hear Dexter say to himself that she is the perfect woman for him. He talks about how she isn’t oblivious to his killings like Rita, but also isn’t afraid of it like Lumen was.
This monologue, which takes place while Dexter and Hannah are in bed, is broken up when Deb calls Dexter. Deb says that she knows that Hannah killed Sal, the same way she killed the others, and asks Dexter to “do what he does best”. Well this makes things interesting. Deb, who hasn’t accepted Dexter’s addiction, finally wants him to kill someone, and it just so happens to be the woman he’s falling in love it. This will likely provide some sort of rift between Dexter and Deb, as Dexter will have to choose between the two at some point. And considering how much Deb knows now, that could be very dangerous if Dexter ends up pissing her off or something.
What do you think will happen between Dexter, Deb, and Hannah? Do you think LaGuerta is going to give up on the Bay Harbor Butcher search? Let us know what you think in the comments!
