One of the most anticipated films of 2013 just revealed the first official synopsis! With the first trailer arriving soon and a full nine minutes showing before The Hobbit in IMAX, frankly I’m surprised it’s taken then long. But J.J. Abrams is notorious for keeping hsi secrets like plot details and twists close to the hilt. Check the synopsis below for all we know about this sequel so far.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek Into Darkness:

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

he film stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Alice Eve, Peter Weller, Noel Clarke, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in 3D and IMAX 3D on May 17, 2013.

The synopsis still doesn’t give much away – like the name of the villain, though we know it will be played by Cumberbatch. It seems purposely vague as to not reveal motivation or any major plot points what so ever. Ships are destroyed, Kirk leads the crew on a quest, it gets hard – really wish we had more to go on, but it seems they’re trying to keep all the goods until release, or at least closer to the main event.

Are you excited for this to hit theaters? May can’t come soon enough!
