HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER: “Weekend at Barney’s” Episode Recap
Well the Playbook came back again tonight. Joy. The showrunners of How I Met Your Mother once again manage to move the story along just enough to keep us on the hook, while constant throwing repeat joke after repeat joke to us. It’s old news at this point that the show is running out of ideas, so I won’t spend anymore time complaining about that.
It looks like tonight was the last we will see of Jeanette (Abby Elliot). The crazy character once again showed us how she got her reputation by trashing Ted’s (Josh Radnor) apartment after reading a spam email from Ted’ computer. By episode’s end, Ted finally breaks up with her, and given that we already know that she is the last person that Ted dates before he meets the mom, it means that she must be just around the corner!
Over with Marshall (Jason Segal), and Lily (Alyson Hannigan), they are taking in an art show due to Lily’s new job as the art advisor for The Captain. We also get teased early with the fact that Marshall brought his last bag of skittles ever, but we would find out why later. Well luckily for you, I can tell you right away what happens! During a moment of silence for the death of the artist’s grandmother, Marshall spills his skittles. All of them. Very slowly. And very awkwardly. This did provide me with one of the few laugh out loud moments of the season so far.
Finally, we have our new favorite engaged couple: Robin (Cobie Smulders), and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris). Barney burned the Playbook in a previous episode, but he then reveals to Ted that it was a decoy book, and that the real book is still very much in existence. Him and Ted run through a few bits from the book. It’s ok. But I’m over it. Eventually, Robin finds out that the book is still around, and threatens to leave him, before he pulls all the tricks out of his pockets, literally.
By the end of the episode, Ted and Jeanette have broken up. Ted is sitting on the curve as his stuff, either in tact or brunt to a crisp, is thrown down on him. Once the whole group gets together at the bottom, Jeanette straps fireworks to the playbook, and throws it out the window, exploding in mid air.
Well where do we go from here? Ted is ready to meet the mom. The wedding is being talked about, and figures to actually be coming before the finale in May, though you would have to assume they will find a way to extend their thin time until then. I’ll be interested to see how they handle the time line of events for the latter third of the season.
