ONCE UPON A TIME: The Complete Second Season Blu-ray Review

Once Upon a Time: The Complete Second Season is available on Blu-ray and DVD. The 5-disc set from ABC and Disney includes all 22 episodes and bonus features such as deleted scenes, bloopers, audio commentaries and more! Once Upon a Time is a show that I watch as a result of my wife being a fan. Skeptical at first, I have come to love the fairy tale concept and the characters.

For those of you not familiar with the show, it features Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Lana Parrilla as Evil Queen/Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David, Emilie de Ravin as Belle, Colin O’Donoghue as Hook, Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills, Meghan Ory as Red Riding Hood/Ruby and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold.

The story takes place in Storybrooke, Maine, a sleepy New England town. Drama and mystery arrives when Emma Swan receives a surprise at her doorstep in the form of Henry, the son she gave up 10 years ago. Before she can return Henry to his adoptive mother, he shares a stunning theory that everyone in the town is in fact a fairytale character under a curse. He goes on to say that Emma is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, and is the only one who can save them all. A battle of good vs. evil begins in this fantasy drama.

If you have not seen season one, do not read any further because there are SPOILERS below.

The first season seemed to live as if there was not going to be a second, and tied up so many loose ends from that season. At the end of the first season, Emma Swan broke Storybrooke’s curse, her parents Snow White (Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Dallas) got back together, Henry (Gilmore) survived near death, and evil queen Regina (Parrilla) and Rumpelstiltskin (Carlyle) continued to plot to rule the land.

Season two is a bit darker in feel, and has a very dense plot which is actually difficult to explain at times. Once Upon a Time is a show much like LOST, if you miss an episode you are really thrown off. This season brings a new breed of curse and a new crop of evil foes. Killian Jones (O’Donoghue) aka Captain Hook steals the season. He even has a legion of fans, aptly named “Hookers”. Not to worry, Rumpelstiltskin is stilly vying for the title of head villian. It is a good thing Hook is such a scene stealer because Snow, Charming and Emma are so busy with dramatic story arks that the show would be more tears than excitement.

The cast and characters are great, my personal favorites are Carlyle and O’Donoghue. There is something of Goodwin that has always annoyed me. The writers have improved for the second season, giving the show a much needed edginess. Because of the shows success we have a handful of new fairy tale inspired shows, such as Sleepy Hollow and an Alice in Wonderland themed show airing this year. The key is for Once Upon a Time to keep a hold of the it’s loyal fan base and make sure that the stories stay true to the initial concept without straying too far into melodrama.

If you are a fan of fairy tale mixed with drama, then Once Upon A Time is for you. Make sure you catch up on season two and get ready for season 3 to premier September 29th, 8/7 central.
