MODERN FAMILY Season 4 Blu-Ray Review
Our favorite family of Primetime Emmy Winners is back on Blu Ray for Season 4 of the ABC hit comedy Modern Family. The three disc combo pack feature all 24 episodes from the recent Emmy winning Season 4, along with a score of special features to compliment the laugh-filled episodes.
One of my favorite features on the Blu-Ray was “A Day with Eric.” This feature was simple yet informative and interesting, as it simply followed Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cam on the show, around on a regular day on set. Stonestreet jokes that it’s rare to arrive on set when the sun it out, as the crew is used to shoots that start before the crack of dawn. There is also a tour of his on-set trailer, as well as a funny before and after shot of Stonestreet turning into his on screen character.
There is episode commentary but it is mostly done by the writers. While it is interesting to hear their thoughts on the episodes, as they are the ones who essentially created it, it’s usually more fun to hear from the well-known actors, as it also gives a rare insight to the way they talk and act when they aren’t in front of a camera. I prefer the episode commentary provided on the Always Sunny Season 8 DVD, where the show creators Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day, and Rob McElhenney, give their thoughts on some of the season’t best episodes.
Speaking of the show writers, there is a fun features that focuses just on the writers, sharing some of their memories on creating the episodes that air each Wednesday. It’s a great way to show us the faces of the geniuses behind the scenes, the ones who don’t get all the glitz and glamour that the stars get. Speaking of the stars, if you love Haley (Sarah Hyland), then be sure to check out our interview with her about her film Struck by Lightning.
Of course, just like every other TV series, there is a laundry list of deleted and extended scenes, along with the classic gag reel staple. However, Modern Family’s gag reel isn’t your typical one. Sprinkled in with the usual giggles on set are an impromptu short musical between Phil and Claire, and even better, a montage of the cast dancing to dubstep. Yeah, that exists.
Modern Family is one of the funniest shows on TV, and it certainly didn’t lose any steam with Season 4. If you are a fan of the show, then the Season 4 blu-ray is a must own!
