New OUT OF THE FURNACE Trailer Heats Up Oscar Race
While I’m still partial to the original trailer for Out of the Furnace, starring Christian Bale, Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, and Casey Affleck, which features Pearl Jam’s “Release,” the new trailer released today does shed some more light about plot details in the film, and it’s quite a different look at each supporting actor that ake up one of the year’s best casts. Both trailers are below.
(This looks exactly like the poster for Crazy Heart)
Official synopsis: Russell Baze (Bale) has a rough life: he works a dead-end blue collar job at the local steel mill by day, and cares for his terminally ill father by night. When Russell’s brother Rodney (Affleck) returns home from serving time in Iraq, he gets lured into one of the most ruthless crime rings in the Northeast and mysteriously disappears. The police fail to crack the case, so – with nothing left to lose – Russell takes matters into his own hands, putting his life on the line to seek justice for his brother.

This one hooked me right away. I can only picture, maybe, the screenplay saying “Baze smashes phone.” And Bale, being the Academy Award Winner he is, makes that a significant moment that lands in the trailer.

In an already tight Oscar race, the Christian Bale fan in me is hoping he is either nominated for this, or American Hustle, or both. Since American Hustle has a much greater chance than Furnace to be nominated in other categories (basically every major category), I don’t know if we’ll see him nominated for this one. Regardless, it looks like a very powerful and poignant film by Director Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart…the posters!). Keep in mind that Cooper did direct Jeff Bridges to an Oscar-winning turn for Crazy Heart in 2009, so attention to Bale’s supporting cast should be equally deserved.
