DON JON Blu-Ray Review

After catching Don Jon in theaters, I included it as one of the best films of 2013. Catching it again on Blu-ray only solidifies my decision. Since it was written, directed and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this was immediately on my radar. While on the surface it’s about a man and his porn addiction, it actually takes an interesting look at modern relationships in this internet porn and rom-com filled world. Relationships have been marred by expectations from unrealistic pornography and also romantic comedy movies. Smart, funny, and streamlined, it exudes confidence from its young helmer. While its rumored JGL is moving on to producing and possibly directing Sandman, I can’t wait to see what he handles next.

In addition to a fantastic film, the special features are a must if you’re a fan of the filmmaking process. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has been making short films and sharing the entire process for years through his company HitRECord, so it’s no surprise that there are tons of behind-the-scenes featurettes that delve in to the process and his experience directing his first feature film.

Don Jon and Barbara

Don Jon Official Synopsis:

Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a handsome, good old-fashioned guy known as Don Jon for his ability to bed beautiful women at will. But ironically, even the finest fling doesn’t compare to the bliss Jon finds alone—watching porn on his computer. Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson) is a gorgeous, good old-fashioned girl raised on romantic movies, and she’s determined to find her Prince Charming. Wrestling with expectations of the opposite sex, Jon and Barbara struggle against false fantasies to find true intimacy in this unexpected comedy written and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Kristal Bailey

With a soft spot for movies that fall into the “So Bad They’re Good” category, Kristal Bailey regularly watches B-movies, 80s comedies, and sci-fi from the 50s and 60s. She also refuses to grow up if that means she has to hide her love for Disney and Pixar films.

In her free time, she enjoys reading graphic novels or books that are soon to be turned into movies, watching hours and hours of television, and spending way too much time on Twitter.
