SHERLOCK Series 3 Episode 2 “The Sign of Three” Recap
After an awesome 1st episode, the 2nd episode brought about the wedding we were all waiting for. No, not the one between Sherlock and John Johnlock shippers, but the one between John and Mary. The whole wedding was quite a beautiful affair, but honestly the best part of it had to be the epic best man speech that Sherlock gives. The entire episode pretty much shows us exactly how close Sherlock and John are and how much their friendship has grown and gotten much stronger.
(WARNING! ATTENTION! SPOILERS AHEAD!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!)
The episode starts off with Donovan (we didn’t see her in the first episode) and Lestrade trying to solve a “water gang” situation. The robbers show up who have “Dark Knight Joker” masks on are finally caught by them, but suddenly Lestrade gets text messages saying “HELP. BAKER ST. NOW. HELP ME. PLEASE.” and we all know who that is. Lestrade shows up at Baker St., with a bunch of back up, and sees Sherlock sitting at his desk on his laptop claiming something is hard, and shows off a how to write a best man speech book and then asks, “do you know any funny stories about John?” and then the credits begin.
Then we hear a violin and assume Sherlock is playing it and Mrs. Hudson walks in (with tea) to find him actually listening to it and practicing dancing. And then this awesome exchange happens:
Mrs. Hudson: It changes people, marriage…
Sherlock Holmes: Mmmm. No it doesn’t.
Mrs. Hudson: Well, you wouldn’t understand ’cause you always live alone.
Sherlock Holmes: Your husband was executed for a double murder, you’re hardly an advert for companionship.
Mrs. Hudson: Marriage changes you as a person in ways that you can’t imagine…
Sherlock Holmes: As does a lethal injection.
Also, Mrs. Hudson’s “Who leave a wedding early?” quote she says has some significance later in the episode. Then, the wedding. John and Mary along with the best man Sherlock and everyone else walk out and John and Mary start getting their pictures taken and we have a funny moment where the photographer says just the bride and groom and Sherlock remains in the shot for a bit until John says, “Sherlock” to remind him to get out of the shot and he walks out of it. Then we have a funny and quite weird exchange between Sherlock and a bridesmaid. We meet David, the usher, who actually dated Mary for 2 years and we learn this during a clip of him meeting with Sherlock. Then we see Sherlock questioning him about social media and if he is really over Mary or not. Sherlock is being very protective and doing his high functioning sociopath bit. Then we see Archie and Sherlock together, Archie hugs him, then we see them talking a bit and it’s really quite a cute moment. Sherlock would be an interesting father if it ever happens. “Do you like solving crimes?” “do you have a vacancy?” another exchange between Sherlock and that bridesmaid. Then we get a sudden showing of Mycroft running on a treadmill with some seriously tight leggings or pants….looks more like leggings, but actually they’re probably pants…whatever anyways, (werk those legs Mark Gatiss!!!) Sherlock calls him and then talks “in the 11th hour…..” shoutout to Doctor Who there, “enjoy not getting involved Sherlock” says Mycroft as he hangs up. John also sees that his old commanding officer came to the wedding, he gives off a bit of a bad guy vibe when he first appears.
And then Sherlock’s best man speech begins, he starts off reading a few postcards and letters from people who did not come to the wedding and then he begins, “Ladies and gentlemen…family and friends….and others…” already a perfect a speech. We then see a sequence where Molly is talking to everyone about Sherlock potentially being John’s best man. Then the speech continues with a scene where John is trying to ask Sherlock to be his best man. Also, we see Sherlock with an eye and it’s hilarious because he drinks from a glass with the eye in it, it’s cute to see exactly how baffled and flattered Sherlock was to know he is indeed John’s bestfriend. Then Sherlock begins talking about some funny stories about him, talking about his blog. He begins to name off a few cases they’ve tackled together. And then comes The Bloody Guardsman case: the lead guardsman Bainbridge in this is actually Alfie Enoch aka Dean Thomas from Harry Potter, we get a funny moment when Sherlock walks with the guardsmen.
So the guardsman is found in the shower bloody, which is weird because he was fine while he was working, (it’s perfect to bring this murder-y case up during John’s wedding) Sherlock then reveals that he didn’t actually solve this case. Then he explains another case, which is actually Sherlock’s stag for John (Bachelor party). This introduced drunk Sherlock and John and it’s incredibly perfect. They then wake up hungover at Baker St. on the stairs. They go upstairs and carry on drinking and play a guessing game with placing post its on their foreheads. Then a client appears and starts talking about her problem (she thought she had dinner with a ghost) and then Sherlock and John precede to try to solve this while completely wasted. They end up in jail and Lestrade gets them the next morning. The way Sherlock is communicating with women who dated a ghost is another “mind place” moment but it in completely different way. Then it goes back to John’s wedding. As Sherlock is about to toast he suddenly thinks of something and pauses. Then we get an appearance by Lara Pulver! Then Mycroft is pretty much helping Sherlock figure out that something might happen at the wedding at exactly any moment. A murder perhaps? Just the perfect thing to ruin a lovely wedding!
He starts walking around the guest and it’s quite awesome seeing him think. Sherlock thinks it’s John’s commanding officer (major) who is in danger. Sherlock then figures out that a blade is one the belt and then it solves the guardsman case as well. Someone put a sharp blade in the belts. After it’s all solved they go back to the wedding and Sherlock dances with that one bridesmaid that was hitting on him. Lestrade brings in the photographer at Sherlock’s request and then Sherlock figures out that the photographer was the one doing everything. Somehow I personally thought Molly’s boyfriend probably had something to do with all these cases. It seemed fitting but, nope! As Sherlock plays the violin, John and Mary dance then Sherlock makes a quick speech to apologize for everything during the best man speech and he suddenly lets it slip that Mary is pregnant. He deduces it and it’s amazing. Sherlock then leaves the wedding, (remember that quote Mrs. Hudson said the day before!!).
Here are a few snippets from the best man speech:
…So if I didn’t understand I was being asked to be Best Man, it is because I never expected to be anybody’s best friend. And certainly not the best friend of the bravest and kindest and wisest human being I have ever had the good fortune of knowing. John, I am a ridiculous man, redeemed only by the warmth and constancy of your friendship. But as I am apparently your best friend, I cannot congratulate you on your choice of companion.
…Actually, now I can. Mary, when I say you deserve this man, it is the highest compliment of which I am capable. John, you have endured war, and injury, and tragic loss – so sorry again about that last one – so know this. Today you sit between the woman you have made your wife and the man you’ve saved – in short the two people who love you most in all this world. And I know I speak for Mary as well when I say, we will never let you down and we have a lifetime ahead to prove that
The point I’m trying to make is that I am… the most unpleasant… rude… ignorant… and all-round obnoxious asshole that anyone could possibly have the misfortune to meet… I am dismissive of the virtuous, unaware of the beautiful, and uncomprehending in the face of the happy.
One thing to think about for Sunday’s finale is:
1. CAM. The letter Sherlock read before the speech, obviously made Mary a bit panicked and aggravated. Does this mean Charles Augustus Magnussen? Is Mary going to be a big part of the finale? Something up?
