Accio Director! Alfonso Cuaron May Direct Harry Potter Spin-Off FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

Anyone feeling like Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Warner Bros. latest effort to continue making money off of the Harry Potter franchise, is little more than a money grab can rest easy. It looks like Alfonso Cuaron, the man who directed the best Potter film, Prisoner of Azkaban, is in “deep talks” to direct the first in the planned trilogy of Fantastic Beasts.

Some of us, like myself, were awfully disappointed when Cuaron declined to direct the fourth entry in the Potter series, Goblet of Fire. Cuaron has gone on to direct the superb Children of Men and is fresh off a Best Director Oscar for the ground-breaking Gravity, but anyone familiar with the Potter franchise knows Azkaban was the best in the series. Deathly Hallows Part 2 comes close, but Cuaron’s infectious direction pushes Azkaban over the top.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Already slated for a Nov. 16, 2016 release, Fantastic Beasts will center on Newt Scamander, the man who wrote the book in the Potter verse. Even better, Potter author J.K. Rowling is providing the screenplay for the first film, which is set to take place 70 years before the adventures of a boy named Potter, in New York, no less.

Think about the possibilities! A period Potter film, in New York? With Alfonso Cuaron at the helm? Forget Star Wars, this is the franchise reboot I want to see.

Ryan Hill used to spend his time writing screenplays into a notebook instead of doing homework. That love of film and all things storytelling led him to spend most of his time writing. He's been a film critic in North Carolina for over five years, and his debut novel, THE BOOK OF BART, is out now. Please buy it. Ryan also feels odd about referring to himself in the third person.
