The History of San Diego Comic-Con Souvenir Books

With the upcoming International Comic Con, it seemed fitting to give a history lesson of all the Souvenir Books of San Diego Comic Con’s Past. Of course, there may be some inconsistencies when presenting the different Souvenir Books. The internet can only go so far.   SO, let’s begin.

SDCC Souvenir Book 19951995: New logo designed by Richard Bruning and his associates. Up until this point, the Toucan was the face of San Diego Comic Con. The Toucan is now retired but can be seen again in the 2009 Souvenir Book!

 

 

 

SDCC Souvenir Book 19961996: Star Trek cover by Dave McKean.This Souvenir Book pays homage to Star Trek and its fans. If you look closely at the bottom right, you can see writing that says, “So strange and bewildering creatures at play in their natural habitats”. It helps if you imagine Captain Kirk saying it.

2000: EC Comics Cover by William Stout. Features biographies from all the artists that attended, Eisner award winners and nominees, original artwork, pics from the Con, sections celebrating EC Comics and Will Eisner’s The Spirit, and much more! Softcover, 144 pages.

SDCC Souvenir Book 2001 2001: Bone Cover by Jeff Smith. Features biographies from all the artists that attended, Eisner award winners and nominees, original artwork, pics from the Con, sections celebrating Captain America and Carl Barks (the Disney Ducks), and much more! Softcover, 162 pages.

2002: “What, Me Comic-Con International?!” Mad Magazine Cover. Features biographies from all the artists that attended, Eisner award winners and nominees, original artwork, pics from the Con, a section celebrating 40 years of Spider-Man, Hulk, and Thor, and much more! Softcover, 160 pages

2003: JLA cover by Alex Ross. Features biographies from all the artists that attended, Eisner award winners and nominees, original artwork, pics from the Con.

 

 

SDCC Souvenir Book 2004

 

2004: Marvel Characters cover by Jack Kirby. This cover pays tribute to the notable works that Jack Kirby did over the years. Features biographies from all the artists that attended, Eisner award winners and nominees and more. Tributes to Hellboy, Jack Kirby, Bob Clampett, Popeye, Godzilla, and the Flaming Carrot. Softcover, 160 pages

 

SDCC Souvenir Book 2005

 

2005: Spirit cover by Will Eisner (the namesake for the Eisner Award). Features biographies from all the artists that attended, Eisner award winners and nominees, a section celebrating Will Eisner and the New Teen Titans, and more. Softcover, 136 pages.

 

 

SDCC Souvenir Book 20062006: Lone Wolf and Cub cover by Frank Miller.  Features biographies from all the artists that attended, Eisner award winners and nominees, original artwork, pics from the Con. 144 pages.

SDCC Souvenir Book 2012

 

2012: The Avengers cover by John Romita Jr. Each celebrating their 50th anniversary this year: Spider-Man, Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Ant-Man (The birthday boys). 192 pages

 

 

SDCC Souvenir Book 20132013: Sandman cover was by Comic Con’s special guest Dave McKean, and celebrates the 25th anniversary of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman series.  Also includes feature coverage on Supermans 75th anniversary and much more. This 224-page, full-color trade paperback, also presents bios and photos of all of that year’s special guests.

 

 

SDCC Souvenir Book 2014

2014: Batman cover by Jim Lee. This Souvenir Book helps celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Dark Knight. The book also features salutes to Marvel Comics’ 75th anniversary, Daredevil’s 50th, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ 30th, Usagi Yojimbo’s 30th, Hellboy’s 20th, etc. 224 pages.
