Oscar Watching: No Indie Spirits GAME

The Independent Spirit Award nominations hit on Tuesday, and as always, they’re a hot topic of conversation. Birdman leads with six nominations, while Boyhood, Nightcrawler, and Selma are just behind with five bids each. But eligible awards contenders like The Imitation Game and Wild were nowhere to be found. It’s hardly good news for either film, but perhaps this is a pushing-back against the obvious awards favorites that only barely qualify as “indie.”

Keep in mind that this is my last round of predictions for Screen Invasion before the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) announces its picks on Monday, Dec. 1. So, in the name of shameless self-promo, you can check out more detailed Oscar musings over at my blog, Awards and Such. Keep in mind that my predictions there and on Screen Invasion might differ, given that I will update both at different times – I’ll update my Screen Invasion picks once a week; I’ll most likely update my blog picks at different intervals.

Does Indie Spirit attention help Selma?
