REAL GEEK GIRLS: The Glamorously Geeky Mandie Roman

The goal of my “Real Geek Girls” series is to show the world that girls truly can be geeky. I’m here to let the world know that girls DO know what we’re talking about. We can be and we ARE just as geeky as the guys. Every now and again, I’ll interview a new geek girl just to highlight how many of us are out there, how real and fun we all are. We come in all shapes and sizes and love many geeky things. Do you know a geeky girl or are you one?

This week, meet Mandie Roman, who goes by Geeky Glamorous. She’s into video games, esports, she does hosting and she is into gamer fashion. She’s got a website where you can check up on everything she’s up too. She is the host of Game Talk Live.

What does being a geek mean to you?
Being celebratory of your favorite fandoms. To be part of a community where we can get excited together over our favorite things!

What’s your opinion on the people out there who think girls are faking their geekiness?
As a community, we have to stop gate-keeping. Let people enjoy things without judging how deep their fandom or knowledge goes. Just remember that without more folks getting into the geek space, we wouldn’t have all these incredible films (did you ever think we’d get a Guardians of the Galaxy film like holy shit), merchandise, and conventions etc.

Who’s your biggest inspiration?
Ashley Eckstein from Her Universe. Ashley realized there was a void in the industry and made it her mission to rectify it, in this case a lack of geek apparel for women. She completely changed the licensed apparel market which at the time was mostly just t-shirts for guys. Without Her Universe, I don’t think we’d see all the geek fashion options we have today.

Tell us a little about your life.
I was actually not a geek growing up. I didn’t get into geeky things until my junior year of high school when I started hanging out with other “art kids” who introduced me to anime and Final Fantasy. I started working at GameStop shortly thereafter where I was for a couple years working at both a store in Southern California and in New York City. I met my husband working at the NYC store after we met in Final Fantasy XI, and we’ve now been together 12 years, married 4! We got married on SyFy’s show (no longer around) My Big Fat Geek Wedding.

If you were trapped in an elevator with one person, who would you want to be trapped with and why?
Jeff Kaplan from Blizzard. I spend so much of my free time playing Overwatch and I would love to pick his brain about creating such a popular game. I want to understand the complexities of character balancing, building a game with esports in mind, and understanding some of their design decisions.

What are some fandoms you are in?
Blizzard games are huge for me (ie Overwatch and World of Warcraft), League of Legends, Splatoon, and Tron. I also really love Fast and the Furious but I don’t know if that’s geeky.

Tell us a little about Game Talk Live.
Game Talk Live is a live video game debate and discussion show. We cover issues in and around the video game and esports industry. I host the show and we have three experts who call in via Skype to discuss. Some issues we’ve covered include gaming addiction, diversity in the game development industry, cosplayers on Patreon, and the future of VR.

Where did Geeky Glamorous come from?
I was looking for a name that without knowing who I was, or seeing an image of me, you’d know I was into geek fashion. Additionally the initials, GG also mean “Good Game” so that was an awesome bonus!

Is there anything you are working on or apart of now that you’d like us to keep our eyes open for or watch?
I’m currently in the process of bringing back my Geeky Glamorous jewelry line, from 2012, so please keep an eye out on my social media for when it goes on sale!

What’s your advice to all the young girls out there who might be afraid of showing their true geekiness?
Life is short. Embrace the things you love regardless of what others around you may think. Live life for you and not for anyone else.
